Def Leppard: When Are We Planning to Work on Another Album

Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott has stated that the band has begun thinking ahead to the follow-up to the band's 2015's self-titled album.

Well, we're always thinking. There's a moment in time where it's total backburner. I mean, the fact that you're aware of it just means you're aware that next year's 2019 and you don't think about it.

When I get home from doing all this promo [for Def Leppard's upcoming tour], I'm going to straight to work on my Down 'N' Outz album, which is my side project. We're making our third album, which we've written and I've gotta kinda finish that off. It's about halfway through. Phil's [Collen, Def Leppard guitarist] just released his Delta Deep thing and I know Vivian's [Campbell, Def Leppard guitarist] still working on Last In Line. We're all doing side things that we're working on.

When this tour's done and we've got a bit of downtime, we'll probably have all collected, individually written bits and bobs for what will be the next Def Leppard record. We share them with each other and go, "Oh. All right. What would happen if we do this with that one and blah, blah, blah?" and, all of sudden, we'll have every bit of half an album written.

„Def Leppard“ wollen wieder ins Studio

Def Leppard’s Vivian Campbell On The Legacy Of ‘Hysteria’, Celebrity Culture & The “Upside” Of Music Piracy

Dust off your platforms, squeeze into those leather pants and start growing out your feathered mullet: 80s rock legends Def Leppard are coming back down under!

It’s been more than 30 years since the English rockers released their iconic Hysteria record. So to celebrate, they’re playing all 12 tracks from front to back when they tour this November. A Def Leppard greatest hits compilation in its own right, Hysteria is home to killer hits like glam rock ballad ‘Love Bites’, the deliciously punny ‘Armageddon It’ and the ‘Coyote Ugly’ classic ‘Pour Some Sugar On Me’. But this nostalgia tour means you’ll also get to hear a bunch of the lesser-known B-side tracks that are usually excluded from your typical Def Leppard set list. It’s safe to say that this is going to be one for the rock n roll history books.

With that being said, who better to recruit than fellow 80s icons Scorpions to join the Leppard lads on their five dates around the country? This will be the first time the German rock gods are touring multiple cities in Australia, so it’ll be a must for all Scorpions fans.

As they’re prepping to hit the road for the rest of 2018, we had a chat with Def Leppard guitarist Vivian Campbell about three decades of Hysteria, hanging out with Scorpions and how music piracy has led to a legion of new fans.

Vivian Campbell: Australia is always a wonderful place to visit. It’s a great audience and a great country. We’re looking forward to playing with the Scorpions too. I’ve never shared a bill with the Scorpions. Early Def Leppard pre-dating my involvement with the band may have shared a bill with them but I’ve never played with them so I’m excited about that. I’m a long time fan.

And we’ll be performing the Hysteria album in its entirety which is always a bit of a challenge but one that we’ll gladly take.

MF: Why do you say it’s a challenge?

VC: It’s just the way it’s presented, it’s a bit different from our normal show. It’s a little outside our comfort zone. But you know, it’s like anything else and you get used to doing it. We’ve also got to figure out a way to present the show. The Hysteria album itself is only 40-something minutes of music, so that’s not long enough to support a whole show. So we’ll have to figure out how to present the show in two or three parts, with Hysteria being the main part of it.

Phil Collen, Rick Allen and I were just rehearsing in LA last week for a couple of days just to get a bit of a head start on some of the tricky bits on Hysteria. A lot of the Hysteria songs feature in any Def Leppard show but there are certain songs that we’ve only ever played as part of the Hysteria package like ‘Run Riot’, ‘Don’t Shoot Shotgun’, ‘Excitable’, ‘Love And Affection’. A couple of them are pretty tricky but it’s all good!

Work On Next DEF LEPPARD Album To Begin In Earnest After Upcoming Tour

DEF LEPPARD has begun thinking ahead to the follow-up to the band's 2015's self-titled album, according to Joe Elliott.

"Def Leppard" was the group's first studio effort since "Songs From the Sparkle Lounge" in 2008.

During a brand new interview with the 106.7 The Eagle radio station, the singer stated about the band's plans for the next LP: "Well, we're always thinking. There's a moment in time where it's total backburner. I mean, the fact that you're aware of it just means you're aware that next year's 2019 and you don't think about it.

"When I get home from doing all this promo [for DEF LEPPARD's upcoming tour], I'm going to straight to work on my DOWN 'N' OUTZ album, which is my side project," Elliott continued. "We're making our third album, which we've written and I've gotta kinda finish that off. It's about halfway through. Phil's [Collen, DEF LEPPARD guitarist] just released his DELTA DEEP thing and I know Vivian's [Campbell, DEF LEPPARD guitarist] still working on LAST IN LINE. We're all doing side things that we're working on.

"When this tour's done and we've got a bit of downtime, we'll probably have all collected, individually written bits and bobs for what will be the next DEF LEPPARD record," Elliott added. "We share them with each other and go, 'Oh. All right. What would happen if we do this with that one and blah, blah, blah?' and, all of sudden, we'll have every bit of half an album written."

Collen told Classic Rock Revisited last November that DEF LEPPARD had already "started writing" new music. "We have three songs on the go," he said. "Rick Savage [bass] has one, a verse that he sent me. I was messing around with some melodies for that too, and Joe [Elliott, vocals] has this amazing idea and I have this one that's kind of finished. I have melodies, a chorus and all the guitar parts. So we've started, officially, without even knowing it, the next DEF LEPPARD album."

Collen added that the new DEF LEPPARD music will "come out in drips and drabs. It'll probably be a traditional album, but you never know," he said. "If someone says we need a new DEF LEPPARD song, we'll put it out. It's great to have every option available."

"Def Leppard" entered The Billboard 200 chart at position No. 10 with first-week sales of just over 30,000 units — nearly all from pure album sales.

DEF LEPPARD's 58-city tour with JOURNEY will kick off on May 21 in Hartford, Connecticut and run through October 6 in Los Angeles.

James Taylor makes arena show feel like an intimate get-together

“Thank you for letting us play in the Your Name Here Arena,” James Taylor joked near the end of his concert Monday night at Scottrade … er, Enterprise Center.

He may have been more on point with the comment than even he knew. The name change had been announced earlier in the day, and some of the arena’s signage as well as its website and social media accounts had already been switched over. But the deal with Enterprise doesn’t formally go into effect until July 1.

But what counted on Monday was what happened inside the building, and that’s where the veteran singer-songwriter — a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame as well as a Kennedy Center honoree and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom — performed a concert that was warm, deeply nostalgic and surprisingly intimate for an arena show.

Taylor brought the place down to size by employing a 10-piece band that included such notables as drummer Steve Gadd, saxophonist Lou Marini, and longtime backup vocalists Kate Markowitz and Arnold McCuller. His stage set, featuring movable, various-size video screens displaying lyrics, old photos and evocative scenes, helped, too.

And then there was the music itself, which most in attendance likely knew by heart.

It’s been 50 years since Taylor auditioned for Paul McCartney and George Harrison and released his debut album on the Beatles’ Apple Records. He began the show with a song from that record, “Carolina in My Mind.”

“Country Road” indicated early on that Taylor would be generous in sharing the spotlight with his musicians and effusive in his praise of them. The song’s opening showcased violinist Andrea Zonn, while a late drum break allowed Gadd to shine. The arrangements of subsequent songs gave the other musicians a chance to put their own stamp on the proceedings; Marini on the lovely, torchy “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight,” keyboardist Kevin Hays on “Jump Up Behind Me,” McCullers on “Shower the People” and so on.

Maple Mountain High yearbook page called 'prank' and 'mistake'

SPANISH FORK — Students at Maple Mountain High School used some pretty strong words to describe the Red Devils at Springville High School in their yearbook this year.

So strong that administrators were forced to take action.

"I feel so bad," Anika Broberg, a junior at Maple Mountain High, said Saturday. "I don't want Springville to think we said these words, because it's not true."

The page contained a word cloud in the shape of Springville's logo, with one-word descriptions of the school under the heading, "Describe Springville." Words included "snobby," "egotistic," "stupid," "lame," "satanic," "trash," "annoying" and more.

Several in the community are outraged about it, but Nebo School District officials say they are working to rectify the problem and the potential issues it might create.

"As sometimes happens, students might think something is funny but this definitely is not funny. This is something we take very serious," Lana Hiskey, district community relations specialist, said Saturday.

She said a sticker is being created to put over the "inappropriate page" in the books that haven't yet been handed out.

About 500 or so books, however, are already in the hands of students.

Hiskey said the school will ask that those books be returned to cover the page that she believes did not get approval from advisers on the yearbook staff prior to its printing.

"No one saw the page before it went to print," she said, adding that there will be more checkpoints put into place to prevent such an incident from happening again.

"We would never condone anything like this," Hiskey said. She said the district is working on various projects, including having T-shirts made that promote unity between the two schools, which stand less than five miles apart in Utah County.

"Never have I met anyone who was defined as any of those words," said Kilee Hullinger, a cheerleader and junior at Maple Mountain High School. She said her friends at Springville High School are "fun, loving, compassionate."

"It was meant as a prank, but somehow it got through," she said.

"They're our friends and our family and that's the words they should be described as, not the words that they were," Kilee said. "I'm sorry those words were said about them."

Administrators at both schools met together late Friday after realizing what had happened and are continuing to work at a solution.

"We are truly sorry that we have hurt our dear friends and neighbors that we love and respect," wrote the Maple Mountain High School administration. "We acknowledge and accept responsibility for our mistake. We are taking action to resolve the situation and to ensure that something like this doesn't happen in the future."
